How many rated chess players are there?
The pools we can count, and the one nobody publishes.
Lichess publishes its rating distributions, so its pools can be counted exactly: 657,474 rated blitz players, 466,867 rapid, 336,344 bullet, 38,941 classical. Those are rating entries rather than people — one person appears in several — so they cannot simply be added together.

FIDE publishes its whole list, so its pools can be counted too: 219,442 active standard-rated players, 199,762 rapid, 119,536 blitz. Chess.com is the gap. It publishes no rating distribution and no rated-population figure, and this site will not print one: our Chess.com distributions are mapped from the Lichess ones, so quoting their total would be stating one platform’s population as another’s.
Common questions
How many people play rated chess in total?
Nobody can say precisely. The counted pools above overlap heavily with each other and with Chess.com, which publishes nothing, so any single total would be an estimate presented as a count.
Why is FIDE so much smaller than the online pools?
Because a FIDE rating requires playing rated games over the board in organised events. Online rating is a click; an over-the-board rating is a tournament entry.
Why can I not just add the numbers up?
They are per-pool counts, and one person can appear in every one of them. Adding them counts the same player up to seven times.

Chess.com publishes no rating distribution. Those figures are derived from the Lichess distribution mapped through the conversion anchors, and are rounded accordingly.
