How different are your rapid, blitz and standard ratings?
Measured on the same people rather than on two populations: 16,096 titled players who hold all three FIDE ratings. The gap is far smaller than the folklore says, and for a third of players it runs the other way.
The gap is real, and it is small
The received wisdom is that your rating drops sharply as the clock speeds up, and that a strong classical player is a much weaker blitz player. FIDE publishes three ratings for most titled players, so this is checkable rather than arguable.
The median titled player is 26 points lower at rapid than at standard, and 40 points lower at blitz. That is the whole effect. It is roughly the difference between a good week and a bad one, not the chasm the folklore describes.
The measurement matters as much as the number. This is a PAIRED difference — each player compared with themselves — which is not what you get by putting two published medians side by side. That comparison also picks up the fact that different players enter different events, and cannot separate the format from the field.

And for a third of players it goes the other way
64.1% of these players are rated lower at rapid than at standard. Which means 35.9% are rated the same or higher — more than one in three.
At blitz it is 68.7% lower, so nearly a third are better at the fastest control than at the slowest. The middle half of players sit between 96 points below and 14 points above their standard rating at blitz. The spread is much larger than the median, and the median is what everybody quotes.
So the honest version of the rule is not that fast chess lowers your rating. It is that fast chess lowers MOST people's ratings slightly, and raises a substantial minority's, and you cannot tell which group you are in without playing.
The gap widens with strength, then stops
Split by standard rating and the gap is not constant. Below 2000 the median blitz gap is 18 points. At 2200 to 2299 it is 46. At 2300 to 2399 it is 56 — the widest band in the data.
Then it narrows again: 42 points at 2400 to 2499, and 43 at 2500 and above. The players with the largest gap between their slow and fast chess are not the strongest, they are the ones just below the top.
One plausible reading, which the data supports but does not prove, is about what a rating is built from. A 2300 player's standard rating rests on preparation and long calculation, which the clock takes away. By 2500 the fast-chess skills and the slow ones have both been trained hard, so less of the advantage is left behind when the clock speeds up.
Why the pools do not explain it
A natural objection is that rapid and blitz fields are simply weaker, so ratings there are inflated relative to standard and the gap is an artefact. Paired measurement is what removes that objection: the same person is compared with themselves, so a difference in who enters cannot produce it.
What paired measurement cannot remove is a difference in how many games each rating rests on. FIDE rapid and blitz ratings are typically built from far fewer games than standard ones, which makes them noisier — and noise widens the spread without moving the median much. That is consistent with what the table shows.
It also means the third of players who are higher at blitz are not all genuinely better at blitz. Some of them are the lucky tail of a small sample, and nothing in this data can tell them apart from the real speed specialists.
What this does not cover
Titled players only, because they are who holds all three ratings often enough to pair. Whether the same gaps hold for a 1400-rated club player is not measured here, and the trend across bands suggests they would be smaller rather than larger.
These are FIDE over-the-board ratings, so none of it transfers to online blitz. An online rating is a different pool, a different system and usually thousands of games rather than dozens — the guide comparing Lichess, Chess.com and FIDE covers that separately.
And 16,096 players hold all three ratings out of 24,486 titled players. The ones who do not are mostly players who never entered a rated rapid or blitz event, which is its own kind of selection: this measures people who play all three formats, not people who play one.

Is your blitz rating lower than your standard rating?
Usually, but by less than people expect, and not always. Among titled players holding both, 68.7% are rated lower at blitz than at standard, with a median gap of 40 points. The other 31.3% are the same or higher.
How much lower is a rapid rating than a standard rating?
The median titled player is 26 points lower at rapid than at standard. The middle half fall between 82 points below and 22 points above, so the spread is several times the median and a third of players are not lower at all.
Do stronger players have a bigger gap between blitz and standard?
Not the strongest — the ones just below the top. The median blitz gap peaks at 56 points for players rated 2300 to 2399, and narrows to about 43 points at 2500 and above. Below 2000 it is only 18 points.
